whiteheadAbout Brighter Whithead

Whitehead is a small Edwardian seaside town with commanding views of Belfast Lough and the Irish Sea. The Town with a population of just over 4000 has entered Ulster in Bloom since 1995 and this is our second opportunity to represent Northern Ireland in Britain in Bloom. Over these 11 years the Brighter Whitehead group has grown from a group of 6 retired gentlemen to over 30 volunteers. The aims of the group from the start was to contribute towards enhancing the town through environmental improvements in association with other community groups, businesses and statutory organisations. With a first year budget of £450 the group has come a long way, today we have our own glasshouses, a branded land rover and over 34 businesses supporting our activities to make Whitehead a place worth living in, visiting and investing in.

About Britain in Bloom

What is Britain in Bloom?

Britain in Bloom is the largest horticultural campaign in Europe. Britain in Bloom encourages people to improve their local environments through high levels of cleanliness and imaginative planting of trees, shrubs and flowers and promotes projects that incorporate sustainability principles. The campaign supports projects that improve the quality of life of everyone in the community and encourages community involvement. Britain in Bloom is open to everyone.

When does it happen?

Annually. The campaign has a year-round aim of creating a more beautiful Britain at local neighbourhood level, supported and encouraged by independent local, regional and national competitions.

Who can get involved?

Everyone. You don't even need to know anything about gardening. If you want to show that you care about the area in which you live and work - join the campaign.

What are the benefits?

Long term improvements to the local environment, increased civic pride, increased tourism, regeneration of areas in need of development, stimulation of voluntary work, sustainability, recycling, minimising waste and energy conservation.

So how do I get involved?

Apply for a Britain in Bloom information pack. You'll get detailed advice, hints and tips plus useful contact information on how to get local support, sponsorship and funding, and how your local environment will improve thanks to your involvement.
